I think we are standing at a point in time where, we are lucky (or otherwise depending on your perspective) to be able to witness, a phenomenon called “turning east”. Yes, the world is definitely turning to the east for what it has to offer, be it spiritual sciences like yoga or food sciences like our own herbs and probiotic foods. If you carefully observe the food trend (just google !) from China to San Francisco, it is all about “super foods” like clarified butter (our ghee), the gut friendly probiotic foods (our pickles & curds) and …the biggie of the lot is Golden milk aka Turmeric Latte…sounds familiar? Yes, the same foods our mothers and grandmothers have been feeding us while we wanted to look cool trying to eat fries and grab a coke !
So chuck the coke, pick up this super cool Turmeric Mango Lassi and celebrate the mango season ! Here is what you will need
Yogurt or curd as we call it, is the base of this drink. It is recommended to use thick, unsour curds.
If you are wondering what is the butter doing in the lassi shop…Remember the emulsification technique from the Aviyal post? By blending butter and yogurt, in other words emulsifying the fat in the liquid, we will be able to achieve a creamy, fluffy consistency. Make sure to use the unsalted variety.
Also, I am using fresh mango pulp here. During the mango season, I tend to make batches of mango pulp and store in the refrigerator, so I can quickly whip up lassies and shakes. You can chose to use fresh/frozen mango pieces in the place of the pulp.
The ginger lends a nice flavor twist to the lassi. Do not go overboard on the ginger as it tends to overpower all other flavors. So I would recommend sticking to a max of 1 tsp of grated ginger.
Turmeric is a super food and is a must in all the Indian households. I think there are entire websites dedicated to talk about the endless benefits of turmeric.
I am using honey as the sweetener here. You can chose to use sugar/jaggery etc.,
Every ingredient listed above in the quantities mentioned, is very benificial to the human system – the probiotic curd, blended with seasonal mangoes, ginger & turmeric makes this a “super food smoothie”
Blend all the ingredients listed above in a blender till you get a creamy frothy smooth lassi. You can add a couple of ice cubes while blending if you like to serve it chilled. Pour in a tall glass , drizzle some honey and devour ! See you in Mango heaven 🙂
